The talons of eagles are impressive, no doubt. According to scientists at HawkQuest in Colorado, a bald eagle’s gripping strength is ten times stronger than the average grip of an adult human hand. The (uncited) pressing power in pounds per square inch (psi) for a bald eagle has been estimated to be from 700 psi up to 1000 psi; however, HawkQuest notes it’s more likely between 300 to 400 psi.
Talons are made from a hard protein called keratin (same as our fingernails), but the real strength doesn’t come from their talons but from the strength of the muscles, tendons and bones. As strong as they are, they are just as gentle as can be when it comes to rolling and maneuvering their eggs in the nest, which is currently taking place all over the Midwest now.
